The 90s Was Disneys Best Decade

When it comes to Disney movies, it’s not uncommon for fans to immediately go back to the classics. From films released in the 1950s such as Peter Pan, Cinderella, and Alice in Wonderland, to the ‘60s and ‘80s classics like The Jungle Book and 101 Dalmatians, these are the films we all grew up with. However, there’s nothing quite like the Disney animations released in the ‘90s, which are among the ones being revived into remakes and live-action films today. Take a stroll down memory lane with some of the best Disney classics of the ‘90s.

The Little Mermaid

Although The Little Mermaid was released in 1989, it served as the spark that allowed Disney to shine bright throughout the next decade. The movie brought Disney back to its essence, with the introduction of a new princess. Ariel is a mermaid who desires to live on land as a human thanks to her love for Prince Eric. She gives up her voice in exchange for legs, and from there, drama ensues! The Little Mermaid won two Academy Awards: Best Song for “Under the Sea,” and Best Original Score. The film was an instant classic and a live-action movie is now in the works.

Beauty and the Beast

In 1991, Disney released another successful hit: Beauty and the Beast. It tells the story of Belle, a young woman who becomes the Beast’s prisoner in his enchanted castle after offering to take her father’s place. Beauty and the Beast was the first animated movie to ever receive a Best Picture nomination at the Academy Awards and went on to win two awards: Best Original Song and Best Original Score.

Aladdin

Aladdin, released in 1992, is considered one of Disney’s most successful movies, and it’s a no-brainer given the catchy soundtrack and Robin Williams’ inspired sense of humor as the voice behind Genie. The film follows the rags-to-riches story of Aladdin, who wishes to become a prince so he can win the heart of Princess Jasmine. Aladdin won the Academy Award for Best Original Song for “A Whole New World” and the Best Original Score.

The Lion King

Released in 1994, The Lion King tells the story of Simba, a young cub who is heir to his father’s kingdom. He is forced into exile after his father’s death. Known for having a strong theme and notable character development, the film delves into the importance of friendship and life lessons that help Simba reclaim his rightful place. The film received three nominations for Best Original Song at the Academy Awards with “Can You Feel the Love Tonight” winning the title.

Toy Story

Toy Story, released in 1995, was the first Disney movie released through Pixar Animation. It is also the first purely computer-animated film by Disney. It tells the story of Andy, a young boy whose toys come to life and lead adventures of their own when humans aren’t around. It gave birth to two iconic characters: Buzz Lightyear and Woody. Apart from several Academy Award nominations, the film led to three successful sequels.

Mulan

Mulan, released in 1998, has always been praised thanks to its strong female lead character. It tells the story of a girl who joins the army disguised as a man to protect her father. It served as an inspiration to many, and a live-action film is in the works.
