She Did WHAT?! The Story Behind The ‘90s Macarena Craze Might Shock You

The 1990s was a decade filled with vivacity, and this was seen nowhere more clearly than in the over-hyped Macarena craze. Depending on your age, you or your parents surely used to dance along to this song at parties or in the club. The Macarena captured the ears of millions around the globe in 1996, so much so that it became an epidemic.

While we all agree that music quashes the language barrier, have you ever wondered what the meaning behind this iconic dance mantra is? Brace yourselves as this might shock you. Indeed, it may even ruin your childhood.

In the song, the name Macarena refers to a woman who attempts to lure men into dancing with her. And if she happens to like the man’s moves, she’ll take him home. The first verse says: “When I dance they call me Macarena And the boys they say “que estoy buena.” They all want me, they can’t have me. Move with me, jam with me. And if you’re good I’ll take you home with me.”

Well, we can’t deny that the abovementioned lyrics were a bit cheeky. However, it gets quite raunchy as the lady does her thing. While getting all this attention from other guys, she then admits she has a boyfriend named Vittorino.

The song goes on: “Now, don’t you worry ‘bout my boyfriend, the boy whose name is Vittorino. Ha, I don’t want him, couldn’t stand him, he was no good so I.”

Now, after proudly disclosing that she is cheating on her lover while he is out of town, she says in the song: “Now come, what was I supposed to do? He was out of town, and his two friends were soooooo fine.”

The most shocking part about this whole revelation is not only that she’s cheating on her beau, but she is also actually cheating on him with his two best buds as well. Wack!

And while many of y’all still dance to this, it’s finally time to learn the true meaning behind Macarena. Bopping to it is fine, I guess, but just don’t go playing out the lyrics in real life!
